More Fools & Horses

The boys of Fools & Horses came back to Arlington Friday night for some fun... and to play a lot of covers. It's what the crowd goes for. I have to say, I love their music best- but they do a fine cover of The Darkness, and Hey Jude brought the house down after a really crazy raucous song that I'm blanking on now.

Just a couple of piccies from the show. I was in a better spot this time for some really great photos of the guys. And I got some even better shots of my friends! I even got a free CD for bringing them with me- I'm frankly ashamed I hadn't bought their new album yet (even if the release party is officially tonight). I am not their biggest fan, compared to some of the ladies who show up every time... but I do love 'em. Maybe focusing on these delightful good times will help me get through the eternal slog that is hand sewing the binding onto my itty bitty table topper. I really am the slowest hand sewer on earth...

Speaking of music...

Matt, of Fools & Horses, was just interviewed in the Baltimore Sun! Good for him, and the band. You can read it online.

More music

Since I moved to Virginia, I've been very excited to see that my friends' band, Fools & Horses play in this area a lot. This weekend is boyless while he's on vacation, so I decided to check out the band last night at Clarendon Grill, about four blocks from my house. The location is perfect, but it is not my kind of bar. There was at least one bachelorette party in residence, and a ton of drunk former frat boys and 20-30something nearly undressed ladies. Other than being a bit disgusted by the meat market (and having my beer knocked into half a dozen times), it was a fantastic show. Besides, the crowd liked the band, so they can be forgiven for pretending to mosh and being inane dancers. After the second or third beer my dancing probably wasn't ballroom quality either. For what is probably the first time on record, I remembered my camera AND remembered a charged battery. The photos aren't super, but I did at least give it a whirl!

Music and Musing on Autumn Rose

This weekend was fantastic. On multiple counts, even. I got to have delicious steak and equally delicious conversation on Friday night with the boy, and I spent Saturday swatching and casting on for Autumn Rose.

No really. I'm almost done with the corrugated ribbing! You'd think aliens came by and stole my usual placid boring non-swatching self. As always, I had to go up a needle size. I may knit tight, but at least I knit consistently tight. I started out with the Addi Naturas... I hate them. I've switched to the metal Addi's and am already significantly happier with my work. I'm hoping to finish the ribbing on the train tomorrow, so I can come home and do the prep row for my beautiful colorwork! I also need to make copies of the charts- the book is far too large for convenient metro knitting.

Saturday night the boy, my friend Stephanie, and I went to dinner in Arlington- Whitlow's on Wilson will evidently become one of my new haunts in my new neighborhood! As we were waiting to order, I was watching the door and said "huh, that guy looks like Dan... only taller." Silly me. It was indeed my friend Dan. He lives in Southwest... his friends mostly seem to live in Bethesda... so that was a pretty random meeting! I think the whole world is coallescing in Arlington nowadays. After dinner, we went to Iota to see my favorite rockers, Fools & Horses. I was completely unimpressed by the first act, since they were a bit too Christian rock and way too feedback-full for any kind of enjoyment. The middle act was rocking, however. The Sometime Favorites had a really great sound, and I definitely want to check out their music a bit more. Their rendition of Gin & Juice had the whole crowd singing along. The night was of course capped by the boys of F&H, who I have adored from their humble(r) beginnings and will always love. Their new song "Selfish" screams radio to me, and if I don't hear them all over the local rock stations soon then those people are craaazy. A good crowd stayed to see them, and my roommate and her boyfriend joined us midway through the show as well. A good time was apparently had by all, since most of us left humming their music. Or in my case, still singing it- I can't help knowing the words! Jamie is pretty enthused by them as well, and good taste in music is a key component in any boyfriend. My only regret from the night was not bringing my camera- it seems to be missing in action. We had awesome seats at the bar, and then right in front of the stage for F&H, and I could have snapped some great shots in that brightly lit venue. I'm not much of a shutterbug, but I was definitely kicking myself in this case.

Speaking of music, on this tangent, March is a crazy music month. We're seeing Jonathan Coulton again (my 4th time, Jamie's 3rd, our second together as a couple, since we met at his show at the Birchmere in August). We're not fans or anything. Then we'll be seeing Live at 9:30 Club's "Surprise! At the Club!" show. And I also have tickets to see The Mountain Goats, up from Raleigh where my pal Abby blogs them with love. I really want to see them live, but I'm a bit nervous about trying to catch a show on moving day. I guess if it all goes smoothly, I can nap and then head downtown. Hmm.

The Stupor Bowl festivities were a bit lacking in vim this year due to them being all-vegetarian and almost-all-healthy. Most of us had a glass of wine, and I think my friend Adam even managed a beer- but the mulled cider was the drink of choice. If everyone hadn't had to drive, mayhaps it would have gone differently. I worked on Autumn Rose during the game, and then consoled myself with some easy-peasy Hanami once my Pats LOST. Oh cruel world. Work tomorrow will be insufferable. At least I have Autumn Rose to see me through! And twilight yoga at 6pm, if I can somehow get out of work on time. Yoga is my new knitting. Except for the part where I knit obsessively, and am an inflexible beginner yogi, once a week... gotta start somewhere!

You'll never guess what I did this evening...

I cast on for my Philosopher's Wool sweater. Shocking!

It's cute!
Philosopher's Wool sleeve

But it creates relative carnage in my living space:
Philosopher's Wool sweater

The dark basket in the back left of that photo is currently holding the whole work in progress- lots of wound balls and so forth. I like my striping pattern for the sleeves so far, and can't wait to get to the fair isle. I figured I would start with a sleeve, to see how my gauge is. Thus far it seems accurate, for a sweater this enormous. It's meant to be mainly a jacket (and the wool isn't touch-skin soft, so that's fine). I'm thinking it may end up a bit 80s-tastic for my taste, but my Mom would probably love it. Either way, someone will get some serious warmth out of it. It is also my first real project for the Anne Knit-and-Read-Along- so hurrah for getting started. I am on Chapter 13 of Anne of Avonlea, which means I'm already behind on the reading as well. Tut tut.

I also cast on for another fun little project the other day. When I get very cold, I remember to start winter projects. This happened last year with leg warmers (knitted completely within a week, but then I never sewed them up). This year, I need fingerless mitts. I may try and actually finish them, this time.
Endpaper Mitts

The tubular cast on is very stretchy- it may even be too stretchy for my taste. But I can say I learned something new, which is good in and of itself.

The real life stuff has been fun- last night I went to see Fools and Horses, which is a band comprised of two brothers I know from high school and two other bandmates. They are, frankly, fantastic- check them out on iTunes if you like the Beatles, rock music in general, and superb guitarists. They played a lot of covers yesterday- the boy and I agreed that perhaps they could have played more of their own music. I understand that it was a college kid crowd, but they have already put out two CDs- and their music is better than most of the cover songs! I ran into another friend from high school while I was there, which was also lovely.

Tomorrow is a visit to my local yarn shop and then a pizza party with my college roommates. We may craft. And Monday, which is a blissful federal holiday, I plan to spend doing work. This rather defeats the purpose of not having to go to work, I realize, but it's time to knock out some writing. I'm hoping to put in a solid number of hours before heading to dinner in Vienna, and starting my workweek off right.

I would very much like to finish the Endpaper Mitts tomorrow. I wonder if it can be done? I'm still very wide awake, so maybe I'll work on the first one a bit more tonight and listen to more Anne of Avonlea from the Librivox recording... I am such a knit nut.
